WEIGH ME THE FIRE: THE ELEMENTS OF AN OLD LIBRARY

10:00am on Saturday 9 April

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

The Old Library, St John's College, St John's Street, CB2 1TP

An exhibition of Old Library treasures themed around the four classical elements: fire, air, water and earth.

Ignes, aer, aqua, terra: fire, air, water, earth. Although they now seem a quaint way of understanding the physical nature of the universe, the four classical elements remain intertwined with our conceptions of disaster, warfare, ecology, myth, poetry and religion. St John’s College explores some of these dynamics in a themed exhibition of diverse treasures from the 17th-century Old Library’s collections, including medieval manuscripts, early printed books, personal papers, maps, interactive illustrations, and pioneering snapshot photography.

With an eye to pandemic-related caution, the exhibition will involve timed, ticketed entry to the Old Library; members of staff will give each group an introduction to the Library's history, and will be available to answer questions.

A version of the exhibition will appear on the Library's website on Monday 11 April.
