‘The disasters that shaped us’: the wars, droughts, and migrations of the long-19th century that made modern East Africa
The famous revolutions of the long-19th century were not limited to Europe, but equally transformed what is now Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. For East Africa it was a time of extensive wars, natural disasters, and migrations that led to the rise and fall of the Maasai, the lords of the savanna, and gave us the stunning landscapes and cultural beauty that is globally cherished.
This talk is one of a series of two, there will be a second talk from 7pm-8pm following on from this: Dr Jean Wilson (MBE): 'Splendid in ashes, and pompous in the grave’: the usefulness of funerary monuments. Please book tickets for that if you are interested.
