Sporting hearts: Looking after the heart health of Cambridge

8:00pm-9:30pm on Wednesday 1 April

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Cambridge Union Society, Library, 9A Bridge Street, CB2 1UB

Join the Cambridge United Foundation, Clarissa’s Campaign and the Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Heart & Lung Research Institute for an inspiring and informative conversation exploring sporting health and the vital importance of heart and lung research.

How can we better protect young athletes? Why is cardiac research so crucial? And what are organisations across Cambridge doing to improve heart health in our communities?

This event brings together advocates, researchers and community leaders working at the forefront of heart health.

Hilary Nicholls, founder of Clarissa’s Campaign, established the charity in 2023 to raise awareness of cardiac conditions in young people. Through parliamentary engagement and partnerships with sporting communities, the campaign promotes greater understanding of cardiac risk and expands access to heart screening beyond elite sport. Hilary brings experience from education, public policy and charitable leadership, and is passionate about improving cardiac safety for active young people.

Dr Ana Vujic, British Heart Foundation Intermediate Basic Science Research Fellow and Associate Principal Investigator, leads research into how the heart adapts to stress and exercise. Her work investigates how cells in the heart respond to metabolic challenges, and how understanding these processes could help improve outcomes for patients with heart failure.

Joining them on the panel is Simon Wall, Community Engagement Manager at the Cambridge United Foundation. Simon works closely with local communities to deliver inclusive sporting initiatives that improve physical and mental wellbeing. He brings valuable insight into how grassroots sport can play a powerful role in promoting heart health and supporting young people.

Together, our panellists will explore the connection between sport, research and prevention — and discuss how science, advocacy and community action can work hand in hand to safeguard young hearts.

Whether you are involved in sport, interested in medical research, or passionate about community health, this session offers valuable insight into protecting heart health at every level.
