Learning from legendary coaches: “To swim against the current of your circumstance” – coach Soichi Sakamoto and transcendence

7:00pm-9:00pm on Tuesday 24 March

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Anglia Ruskin University, East Road, CB1 1PT

This is the ultimate inspiring ‘against the odds’ story of coaching success. Soichi Sakamoto, a Japanese-American primary school teacher, revolutionised swimming coaching and made unlikely dreams come true.

It will feature guiding reflective questions, links to Viktor Frankl’s notion of the ‘will to meaning,’ the concept of holistic coaching, and Paul Wong’s ideas around transcendence, to help make sense of Sakamoto’s remarkable coaching life, and what we can learn from it.

Dr David Turner [https://www.aru.ac.uk/people/david-turner] is Senior Lecturer in Sport at Anglia Ruskin University, and has expertise in sports coaching, the development of sports coaching expertise and coach education, learning from legendary coaches, and education.

David is a qualified teacher (BEd in Movement Studies), has 40 years of experience working in education and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
