This event is part of the Department of Computer Science and Technology Open Day.
Sonic Pi is 'a new kind of instrument for a new generation of musicians'. This free, beginner-friendly tool for creating music with computer code can be used by anyone and everyone.
Sonic Pi is used by musicians in venues all over the world from Berlin nightclubs to the Royal Albert Hall. It has even featured in Rolling Stone magazine! Not just a powerful tool for professional musicians, Sonic Pi is also simple enough to teach computer science whilst having fun making music.
Join us for this interactive session during which Sam Aaron, the creator of Sonic Pi, will talk us through using it, and take questions along the way. Using lots of easy-to-understand live-coded examples, Sam will show you how Sonic Pi can be used to code music in a wide variety of styles whilst playfully introducing some core computer science concepts.
This talk, which can be attended on its own, will be followed by a hands-on workshop (separate booking essential) in the afternoon for those who would like to try using Sonic Pi themselves.
