The hidden music of minerals and crystals

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Anglia Ruskin University, East Road, CB1 1PT

The microscopic structures of minerals tell stories of their formation, growth, and transformation over time. This presentation explores an innovative interdisciplinary approach that merges the fields of geology and music through the creation of soundscapes derived from microscope images of minerals.

By transforming the visual data of mineral and crystal structures into musical compositions, we aim to interpret and communicate the stories hidden within these geological marvels. Participants will be guided through the process of converting patterns and textures observed in mineral samples into sounds and melodies.

Each crystal’s growth, complexity, and unique characteristics are represented by corresponding musical elements, creating a unique auditory experience. This exploration not only showcases the beauty of minerals but, we believe also invites to a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

This exciting talk will be brought to life with soundscapes created by the microscope images

Event presented by Dr Domenico Vincinanza, a pioneering expert in data sonification from Anglia Ruskin University with University of Cambridge Earth Scientist Dr Carrie Soderman.
