THE FUTURE OF HOUSING IN THE DIGITAL ERA

6:00pm-6:20pm on Wednesday 6 April

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

This session aims to discuss the current state of the housing sector and the next generation of housing, focusing on the resulting seamless living experience.

It all started, as often within the Cambridge Service Alliance and Cambridge Centre for Housing & Planning Research, with reflections on new disruptive digital services, this time for the housing industry. This industry is undeniably going through profound changes. Technological change is happening, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend. Working from home policies suggest that the definition of ‘home’ is now extended to more than just the day-to-day living experience. Digital technologies combined with the right policy actions can change the way we build and live. The living experience is changing rapidly, and initiatives are multiplying.

For instance, Google introduced Nest, a platform that connects homes thanks to thermostats, indoor and outdoor security cameras, smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, and security system. On the other hand, start-ups now focus their service-offering on the customer by enabling customization strategies, whether by following Off-the-Shelf, Low-cost, or end-to-end approaches. The options currently available to developers and builders are endless. The objective of this session is to showcase the next generation of housing construction and the resulting seamless living experience.
