Embark on an ice-cool journey of discovery – step inside British Antarctic Survey as we open our HQ doors in Cambridge on 16 March 2024 to unveil the fascinating world of polar research, technology, engineering and operations.
Why is Antarctic ice the key to understanding climate change? What do researchers in Antarctica do? How are they conducting their research and what are they trying to find out? Discover the answers to these questions, get a taste of what life and work is like in the extreme conditions of Antarctica, and find out why research there is so vital.
Meet polar scientists and engineers, pose the difficult questions and sample life as a polar researcher! Whether you’re interested in scientific research, cutting-edge technology, the impact of climate change, our research stations, vehicles and equipment, the remarkable RRS Sir David Attenborough or our operations in extreme conditions… this ice-cool experience is open to everyone.
Hear stories from those who have experienced life and work in the freezing winds and icy wilderness of Antarctica. Bed down in a polar researcher’s field tent and try on the essential kit necessary to endure such inhospitable conditions. Literally, step inside the boots of a polar explorer and discover the methods they use to study the ice, rocks, ocean and animals. And, of course, don’t miss the chance to capture a photo with the penguins aboard our snowmobile!
Join us and learn that what happens in Antarctica doesn’t stay in Antarctica
