ENGENDERING EQUALITY: THE FUTURE OF FEMINISM IN AN AGE OF UNCERTAINTY

6:30pm-9:00pm on Friday 1 April

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Jessa Crispin, Dr Finn Mackay and Prof Yra van Dijk in conversation about the future of the feminist movement. From the question of inclusivity to gendered violence and the role of safe spaces, no stone is left unturned in this bold and interdisciplinary panel discussion. Questions welcome from all digital audience members. Hosted and presented by Lotte Hondebrink.

In this interactive panel discussion, the panel of speakers and presenter Lotte Hondebrink tackle the key questions regarding the future of feminism. In which direction should feminism go from here, and with whom?

In today’s world of uncountable information bubbles, which have only drifted further apart in the tumult of lockdowns and political polarisation, the answer to these questions is far from clear. The only given seems that there is still a lot of work to do. After many decades of feminist activism, women’s position in virtually all societies is still more precarious than men’s, and women remain a target of many forms of gendered violence. There is still a lot to talk about, in order to begin envisaging the best direction for all.

This panel discussion aims to do precisely this talking, focusing on some of the most fundamental questions arising from the present situation. It aims to be an open and inclusive environment, where people can think along and ask questions. The format will be an online interactive broadcast via Zoom, free of charge and open to all, for the entertainment and intellectual nourishment of everyone who wishes to join.

Intended age group:
Because topics of discrimination and gendered violence will be discussed, this event is not recommended for children under 12.

Central themes and questions:
- Can women’s equality be seen as something that is getting better? If not, where are the main points of regression/stagnation and how can we tackle them?

- How do we combine the need for inclusivity of feminist movements with the need for safe spaces? What role can men play?

- Questions about gender are complicated. How can we navigate intersectionality and questions that could simply have different answers for different people?

- From a feminist perspective, what can inequality tell us about how people relate to each other? If not, why not? If it can, is there a better way?
