Detectives with colour

10:00am-2:00pm on Saturday 21 March

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Philippa Fawcett Drive, CB3 0AS

Become a detective with colour in this interactive demonstration led by some of our Master of Research (MRes) students from the Sensor Centre for Doctoral Training. You will see how light can reveal the secrets that are hidden in everyday liquids, as the students showcase the low-cost spectrometers that they have designed and built themselves – simplified versions of the advanced instruments that are used in research labs. Watch as their devices identify different types of juices and dyed water by detecting which wavelengths of light they absorb, demonstrating both how the science works and also how engineering can turn an expensive lab tool into something that anyone can build and explore.
