Decolonisation and Independence: An exhibition of 1960s books about African nations

11:00am-2:00pm on Friday 20 March

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Wolfson College, Lee Library, Wolfson College Barton Road, CB3 9BB

Bill Kirkman was Africa Correspondent and Commonwealth Staff Correspondent for The Times in the early 1960s. During this time, he was a frequent broadcaster with the BBC World Service and Africa Service. Bill’s unique collection of books from that period reflect the rapid decolonisation of the continent.

Bill was also a Fellow of Wolfson College from 1968 to 2000, and an Emeritus Fellow from 2000 to 2022. The College is very grateful to Bill’s widow, Anne, for this donation of over 100 books.

This exhibition is free to attend and open to all, with no need to book.

Attendees can drop in between 11am and 2pm on Friday 20 March 2026.

On-site parking is limited, and spaces cannot be guaranteed. If you are planning to drive, please allow plenty of time to find alternative parking nearby in case the College car park is full.

If you park in the College car park and do not have a Wolfson parking permit, please register your car at the Porters’ Lodge upon arrival.

The Coffee Bar is open to visitors and is located in the Club Room, just beyond the Porters’ Lodge.

Serving a range of hot and cold drinks, homemade sandwiches, snacks and refreshments, it is open Monday to Friday between 9:15am and 4:15pm, and Saturday and Sunday between 10am and 5pm.

This event will take place in the Library, which has step-free access, and there is an accessible toilet located in our main building.
