A series of adventures that you can download and do at home to explore the wonders of crystals and structural chemistry. These activities are designed by the curators of the Cambridge Structural Database, a resource created in Cambridge and shared worldwide for education and research. Expect impressive visualisations, fun hands-on guided activities and games for all the family. What is a crystal? Which crystals are hiding in plain sight in our homes? Why isn't old chocolate as good as new chocolate? If you are curious to find the answers to these and many more questions, then get ready for an adventure to discover the wonders of crystals and structural chemistry! This collection of activities is designed by the curators of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), a resource created in Cambridge and shared worldwide for education and research. The CSD is a collection of data that contains information about over one million crystal structures. What can you expect from these activities? Impressive visualisations, fun hands-on guided activities, tasty examples, and games for all the family. And of course: discovery! You will need to observe the world around you, become detectives and find examples of crystals and molecules in your houses. These activities cover topics like elements, the state of matter and the beauty of crystals, common substances you can find in the house and in the CSD, and polymorphism (if this word sounds scary, don’t worry: we’ll be using lego and chocolate)! Have fun! For the educators: These activities are aimed at learners of 8+ years old supervised by an adult. You will need to download the activity handouts, and follow the instructions on the handout and/or on the webpage. To support you, we have presented the activity step-by-step, and we included a glossary and guided discussion for each adventure.
