10:00am-4:00pm on Saturday 16 March
Computer Laboratory, William Gates Building 15 JJ Thomson Avenue, CB3 0FD
Learn how to make music like a DJ with computer code. Find out how robot cars can navigate their way around humans. Craft your own binary bracelet. Take a tour of the William Gates Building. Or solve the puzzles on Pirate Island and find the codes to unlock the pirates’ treasure chest! These are just some of the activities visitors can try out at the Department of Computer Science and Technology’s open day on Saturday 16 March 2024.
On our day of public events, we’ll be showcasing some of the research taking place here, in areas ranging from security to the environment, and from robotics to artificial intelligence. Among other things, we’ll be offering the following activities.
• Code like a DJ with Sonic Pi software! Sonic Pi is 'a new kind of instrument for a new generation of musicians'. Watch a free demo and join a hands-on workshop where you can try out this beginner-friendly tool for creating music with computer code.
• Make your own binary bracelet: Learn about binary, the language of computers, by creating a bracelet containing your name – and you can take your bracelet home with you afterwards.
• Drowning cities workshop: Using a Lego town and a large trough of water, we’ll find out if AI can be used to predict coastal flooding.
• The Cambridge tree map: Using the touchscreen, discover how AI can help you identify any tree in Cambridge.
• Create your own earthquake: Learn how we can use AI to predict when an earthquake is about to happen.
• Hear from a Security researcher what we can do when technologies are used to harm us. Some devices - like smart doorbells, speakers & baby monitors - can be used to harass victims. Find out more and hear what we could do to address this.
