Lecture Theatre A - University of Cambridge Admissions Office, New Museums site, Bene't Street, CB2 3PT

With India's position over Russia's invasion of Ukraine under increasing scrutiny and interest in where the return of 'strongman' leaders will lead us, Shruti Kapila, Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Cambridge, and Gideon Rachman, chief foreign affairs commentator at the Financial Times, will explore the development of Indian political thought over the last decades and place current events in context.

Dr Kapila is author of Violent Fraternity [published in December 2021], a major history of the political thought that laid the foundations of modern India. Rachman is author of The Age of the Strongman: How the Cult of the Leader Threatens Democracy around the World [out in early April].

Kapila's book takes readers from the dawn of the twentieth century to the independence of India and formation of Pakistan and is a testament to the power of ideas to drive historical transformation. It sheds new light on leading figures such as Gandhi and Vinayak Savarkar, the founder of Hindutva, showing how they were innovative political thinkers as well as influential political actors.
