CAN LIBERAL DEMOCRACIES REGULATE THE POWER OF TECH GIANTS?

6:00pm-7:30pm on Wednesday 6 April

Times shown are in GMT (UTC +0) up to the 26th March. For events on or after 27th March times are in BST (UTC +1).

Wolfson College, Lee Hall, Barton Road, CB3 9BB

A panel discussion chaired by Professor John Naughton of Wolfson College, and the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, with Gina Neff, David Runciman, and Jennifer Cobbe, considering the regulation of global technology companies.

This event is part of 'Wolfson Explores GROWTH 2022'

The networked world is now dominated by a small number of global technology companies, and Western democracies have finally woken up to the dangers posed by such a powerful and largely unregulated industry. To date, however, the 70+ attempts currently under way to rein in tech power have yielded few results. This is in sharp contrast to the situation in China where the country's huge tech industry seems to have been brought under government control. Which prompts the question: can tech giants only be successfully regulated by authoritarian regimes?

Panellists:
Chair: John Naughton, Wolfson College, CRASSH and the Observer
David Runciman, POLIS
Gina Neff, Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, CRASSH
Jennifer Cobbe, Department of Computer Science and Technology
