The adventures of a friendly fungus

Have you ever wondered what fungi get up to? Did you know that some, called mycorrhizal fungi, form friendly partnerships with plants? This online game takes you on an adventure through the underground and intrepid life of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus as it navigates through the soil, finds a plant-partner, forages for nutrients, and swaps these nutrients with the plant. Each stage in the fungus’s life brings a new challenge for you to overcome – press play to see if you would make a successful mycorrhizal fungus!

‘The Adventures of a Friendly Fungus’ was developed by researchers in the Cereal Symbiosis Lab (Department of Plant Sciences) to provide a fun and interactive introduction to arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, and to give an insight into the lives of the unseen fungi beneath our feet. It allows the player to learn about how this fascinating partnership between arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and over 80% of plant species is formed, what benefits it brings to both partners, and why it is important on a global scale.
