Building on our commitment to openness with robust application of the 3Rs: replacement, refinement and reduction through training and education of those caring for and using animals in biomedical research.

We support the University of Cambridge to impress the replacement, reduction and refinement of the use of animals in research:
Replacement - methods which avoid or replace the use of animals.
Reduction - minimising the numbers of animals used - for example by improving the experimental design and statistical analysis used in a study.
Refinement - improving experimental procedures, and other factors affecting animals such as their housing and care, to reduce suffering and improve welfare throughout the animals’ lives.

Ensuring scientific discovery has support from University Biomedical Services, UBS and other institutions to create innovative ways to include 3Rs in animal research, and at the same time address societal concerns about animal research thereby forming a link with the University’s commitment to Openness.”
